Butterflies

Happy Monday!  We began our day by finger painting giant flowers to display in the hallway.  Throughout the week, we will be making some different insects to add to the flowers.  We loved the texture of the paint and enjoyed drawing or writing in it!

Then we played.  It was exciting because there were some new materials to play with!  In the sensory table, there were flowers and all sorts of bugs hidden in them.  We found a lot of butterflies and caterpillars hiding in the flowers!

Today was also the unveiling of a flower shop dramatic play center.  We enjoyed making different flower arrangements to sell.  Everyone took on different roles, such as planting seeds, watering the flowers, making floral arrangements, being a cashier, being a customer, and labeling the flowers with prices.  What fun!  We loved using the seed packets, trowels, gardening gloves, watering cans, and flower pots!  Some children discovered that they could even put flowers behind their ears!

Some of us also built roads with the blocks to drive our cars on.  Some roads were on the carpet and some chose to build roads on the tables.  We also built train tracks.

During circle time, we shared all of our prior knowledge about caterpillars and butterflies.  We knew a lot!  The children were excited to tell me that they are oviparous!  We read a story about a very hungry caterpillar!

We spent some time learning about the butterfly life cycle.  Tomorrow we will talk about the life cycle of a butterfly some more.

Ms. Palmer came in for centers.  She helped us make a book that compares ourselves to a butterfly.  We made comparisons, such as a butterfly has 6 legs while we only have 2 legs.

We also used liquid watercolors to make butterflies.  Everyone painted 2 small coffee filters for a project tomorrow and one very large coffee filter.  The very large coffee filters will be folded into gigantic butterflies once they are dry and hung up in the gym and hallway for the Sock Hop on Friday night!  We are very excited about the Sock Hop and have been working hard to make decorations!  This project required us to use our fine motor skills.  We had to drop the liquid watercolors onto the coffee filters using eye droppers!  It was neat watching the colors mix together!

One new thing that we learned about butterflies is that they use their long tongues to drink nectar from flowers.  The children were also excited to tell me that bees like to collect pollen from flowers to make honey.  We learned a new song called "Buzzing in the Garden."  Each of us got a flower puppet.  One child got a bee puppet and got to fly around to collect the pollen from the flowers.  After each verse, another bee joined in.  This was a great counting song!  We were able to concretely act out the song and get our wiggles out!

In the afternoon session, we also got out the streamers.  Each of us got one set of streamers for each hand.  We pretended that the streamers were butterfly wings and danced around the classroom to music!

Remember that families are welcome to come to the all-school Sock Hop decorating after school tomorrow until 5 p.m.!  Only children with permission from parents will be allowed to stay after school.  Have a great evening!
