Firefighter Visit!

Today was an exciting day in 4K!  We started off our day with the first letter we are focusing on this school year - letter Ff!  Each child decorated a letter Ff by gluing on flames or fire.  These alphabet pages will be done as each letter is introduced and saved to be made into an alphabet book that will go home at the end of the school year!
Then we read a book about fire safety with Ms. Behnke.  She even taught us a song about firefighters.
One of Miss McCabe's favorite stories to read is Fire Truck! so we also listened to it!
Click below to listen to the story.  It has quite a catchy tune!

Then the moment of excitement occurred... the firefighters arrived!  They showed us what they look like when they are wearing all of their firefighter gear.  We learned that even though they might look a little scary wearing their firefighter outfits, they are still our friends.  We should not hide from them!  They even let us try on some of their clothing!  It was heavy!

Then we went outside to look at the fire truck!  We got to look in all of the different compartments to see what the fire truck can carry.  Did you know that the fire truck carries hoses that are different sizes?  We also got to walk on the fire truck and look at all of the gauges.

The most exciting part of all was when the firefighters let us try turning the hose on and off!  We felt like real firefighters!

We also watched the firefighter shoot out water from the top of the fire truck.  The water went really far!
In the afternoon, the firefighters even turned on the sirens and lights for us!
Thank you to the Cleveland Fire Department for coming to visit and giving us coloring books and crayons to take home!  We learned a lot!

After snack, we had playtime!  Miss McCabe set up a fire station for us to play in so we could pretend to take 9-1-1 calls and put out fires!
We also used some scoops to pour, scoop, and measure some orange colored water in the sensory table.  Tomorrow we will add some hoses too!

Some of us also chose to play in the regular play areas.

We spent some time talking about the letter Ff and learned all sorts of words that begin with Ff.  Ask your child if he/she remembers the sound that the letter Ff makes!  We met our feely phonic friend - feather f.

In the morning, we played a fire game.  We all pretended to be firefighters.  When it was our turn, we got to choose a fire to put out.  After we put out the fire, we had to look to see what kind of fire we put out.  It was hard work!  We put out a fence fire, a number five fire, a flower fire, and so much more!  In the end, we realized that all of the fires we put out began with the letter Ff! :)
Each child got to bring home a letter Ff booklet today!  We read the booklet together at school and the children were very excited to read it to you at home.  If your child completes the activities listed at the back of the book and brings it back to school with a parent signature, I will put a sticker on the cover of the book!  I might even have stickers of something that starts with the letter Ff! :)

We are also hoping to make a firefighter ladder snack one day this week, but are still in need of one more item - pretzel sticks.  If you are interested in donating some pretzel sticks, please leave a comment to let us know!  The children enjoy the excitement of creating their own snack to eat and it allows for some variety from our regular snacks, as well as practices the important skill of following multiple-step directions!

Tomorrow is picture day!  I hope everyone brings their smiles tomorrow! :)
