Today was another fantastic day! In the morning session, a new friend joined our classroom! We were so excited to have a new friend to play with, but his friends in the afternoon session miss him tremendously. Today we got right to work on our table activities upon arrival.
We continued to talk about our five senses today. Everybody did a good job of helping Miss McCabe remember what her five senses were! Way to go 4K students!
We read the story Those Mean Nasty Dirty Downright Disgusting but... Invisible Germs. While reading the story, we realized that we touch lots of different items at school and that germs can hide on all of those items! We can't see the germs with our eyes because they are sooooo tiny, but they are there.
Then we talked about how to wash our hands at school to keep the germs away! We learned how to scrub between our fingers and that we need to sing the entire ABC song before we can be done washing our hands! Did you know that just washing your hands doesn't get rid of all the bad germs? Germs like wet places so we need to also dry our hands well to get rid of any last germs that might still be hiding there! Wow! We'll see how well we can keep those nasty germs away from our classroom this winter!
During centers, we used our sense of smell while making a scratch-n-sniff book! Miss McCabe made special smelly scratch-n-sniff paint! We had to smell the paint to figure out which paint to use to paint each item in our booklet! It sure was fun! On Thursday, after the booklets are dry, they will come home so you can have fun reading them together and smelling each picture!
In the morning, Mrs. Brouwer also came into our classroom and helped us catch up on some projects that we were a little behind on! We especially enjoy having special volunteers come into our classroom to help out!
We also continued exploring at independent centers.
We also used our five senses to make popcorn for snack - we listened to the sound of the popcorn popping, smelled the butter on the popcorn, looked with our eyes at the popcorn and popcorn seeds, touched the popcorn with our hands (it was a little warm), and ate the popcorn! We agreed that it tasted a little salty! Of course, we practiced our handwashing skills before eating too! :)
Then it was time to play! The sensory table was in high demand in the afternoon session! We enjoyed scooping up and pouring the water gel beads! While playing with them, we also used some of our senses! They felt a little wet and slimy when we touched them. The beads also made some neat sounds when they were being poured. They looked like pink circles and did not look slimy. When we moved our hands in them, they made big waves that we could watch move! There was not really a smell and we did not taste them because they aren't a food!
We also ran off some energy outside too! Please work with your child on getting his/her coat on independently and zipping it! We have been having difficulties with getting ready to go outside independently and winter is not even here! This is the first step before adding in boots, snow pants, hats, and mittens! It would be a great help if everybody would work with their child on this at home! The longer it takes us to get ready to go outside, the less time we actually get to play and we are always disappointed when our outside time is cut short!
Have a great evening!
