Touch

Today we were excited to spend some time looking for hidden items in the "I Spy" books after arriving at school.  These books have become extremely popular in our classroom!

We are getting so good at naming our five senses!  Today we read a story called Lucy's Picture.  In the story, Lucy wants to make a picture to give to her grandpa, but she doesn't want to paint like her classmates.  Instead she uses a variety of different items to create a picture because her grandpa is blind and can't see.  He needs to use his hands to "see" the picture!  It led to some great discussion about how when one of our 5 senses
doesn't work, we need to rely on our other senses even more!

We practiced closing our eyes and using only our hands to feel objects!  It was tricky to figure out what different objects were using only our hands!  Miss McCabe only put items that started with the letter Tt in the touch bag.

Then we made our own touch pictures, just like Lucy did in the story!  It was a lot of fun!  We kept closing our eyes and touching the different items we glued on our pictures!  We glued on sandpaper tree trunks, Easter grass leaves, feather birds, cottonball clouds, fabric flowers, and so much more!

We have been so excited about our five senses that it has spontaneously carried over into other parts of our day!  During snack, the children decided on their own that they should try eating the snack mix with their eyes closed to see if they could figure out what they were eating (animal crackers, pretzels, cheerios, etc.)!

In the afternoon, several children made their own touch pictures using fabric scraps and other items found in the art center during playtime too!

The sensory table was the attraction of the day once again at playtime!

All week we have been working on making sound shakers!  It was a little tricky to sew together two plates.  We then got to choose an item to put in the shakers: rice, noodles, or beans.  Then we decorated them.  Tomorrow we will get to use the shakers at school and we can't wait!

In the morning, we practiced using our good listening ears while dancing to "The Freeze."

The afternoon session successfully practiced a fire drill today!  We did a great job!  It was a little chilly out so we huddled together like penguins!

We did go outside to play, but a lot of children were complaining about being too cold.  It would be a good idea to send in warm winter coats, mittens, and hats every day as we do try to go outside whenever possible.

Enjoy the evening!
