Today we learned about the moon! We started out our day by cutting out a moon and using special puffy paint to paint the moon. The moon has mountains and craters so the special paint we used allowed us to make moons that had dips (craters) and bumps (mountains)!
We read a book about the moon and learned some neat facts! Did you know that the moon has no water, trees, or air? There aren't any animals or people that live on the moon. Then we learned a song called "Aikendrum." It is about a man that lived on the moon. We decided that this song was pretend because we know that people don't live on the moon! The song mentions a ladle, but most of us weren't sure what a ladle is. Miss McCabe showed us a ladle from her kitchen so that we would know what it is! You can listen to the song by clicking below!
Miss McCabe modeled using her good listening ears to draw what Aikendrum looks like on the SMART Board. He needed spaghetti hair, meatball eyes, a cheese nose, and a pizza mouth! Then we went to the table and listened to the song while trying to draw Aikendrum in our journals!
Then we discovered that there were moon rocks all over our classroom! We went on a search for moon rocks! Some of us thought that maybe Pete the Cat hid them in our classroom when he visited! We put the moon rocks in our sensory table to play with at playtime!
We visited centers again and had fun at the playdough, puzzles, math, and writing centers!
At Miss McCabe's center, we pretended that we were astronauts going to the moon! We had to draw what we would pack in our suitcase to take with us to the moon. There were a lot of creative ideas!
We played a game at snack. Each of us got a moon mat to use. Then we rolled the dice and put that number of Cheerio "craters" on our moon. Of course, we got to eat the Cheerio "craters" when we were done! You can print out your own moon mat to use at home at the following link: http://www.meemeleads.org/4k/monththemeresources/september/Moon%20Mat.pdf
Of course we had time to play and explore all the toys in our classroom!
We also had fun playing outside!
Ms. Behnke read us the story My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss!
You can listen to the story by clicking the video below!
Then we made our own people to go along with the story! First we cut them out. It was a little tricky! Then we used crayons to draw eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Finally, we chose what color paint to use! Then we told a teacher how that color made us feel!
When asked, almost everybody said that painting was their favorite part of the day! Have a great weekend! :)
I really love reading the blog at the end of the day. I look forward to reading each days activities out loud with Emma. She gets so excited to tell me more about it. Thank you so much for the blog.
