Mittens

After completing our arrival activities today, we went to the carpet for the start of our circle time.  Miss McCabe introduced the "mystery helper" today.  We are going to do this every day instead of our old job chart.  Each day one child will be the mystery helper.  Miss McCabe will tell everybody how many letters are in the mystery helper's name.  Then we will help count as she draws a line for each letter.  After that, we have to try to figure out who the mystery helper is by asking Miss McCabe questions or guessing a letter that may be in the mystery helper's name.  Once we have figured out who the mystery helper is, we pretend we are cheerleaders and spell out their name!  Everybody is so excited for their turn to be the mystery helper!

Miss McCabe also introduced us to Brownie!  We all promised to take good care of Brownie when he comes to visit our house!  Everybody is excited for their turn to take Brownie home with them!

We read the story The Mitten by Jan Brett.

Then we practiced rhyming together.  Each child got a mitten and had to find its rhyming match.  This was tricky for some of us!

At the tables, we made our own mittens and colored the animals from the story to place in the mitten as we practiced retelling the story.  This was a great activity for fine motor skills - coloring, cutting, writing our names, and sewing!

We spent some time playing.  In the morning, we mainly played with the monster trucks, pretended to be cats, and colored at the writing center.  In the afternoon, we mainly played with the monster trucks, explored home living, and played Uno.

We learned the difference between a mitten and a glove.  Then we graphed which we preferred to wear.  Gloves had the majority of the vote.

Then we pretended the parachute was a large mitten just like in our story!  We each got to pretend to be an animal from the story and hold a mask of that animal.  Then we practiced sequencing which order each of the animals crawled into the mitten.  We also learned a song where we practiced beginning sounds.  The best part was the end when the bear sneezed and all the animals flew out of the mitten!

We even made it outside for a little while in the afternoon!

Permission slips for the Above & Beyond Museum field trip were due today.  We could use some extra chaperones in the morning session if there is anybody still interested.  It works best on this field trip to have enough volunteers to split the children into small groups of no more than 3 children.  Right now, we do not have enough volunteers in the morning to have groups of 3 or less.  It's not too late to volunteer (as long as there is a completed volunteer form already on file).  Please let me know if you change your mind and are willing to come along on this field trip!

Have a great evening!
