Tacky the Penguin

We started off our day by making bird feeders for all the birds that stay here in winter.  Everybody is excited to hang their bird feeders on a tree at home so they can watch the birds visit!

We spent some time reviewing what animals do in winter: adapt, migrate, or hibernate.  On the SMART Board, we sorted animals by what they do in winter.  Did you know that whales migrate?!  We were excited to learn that whales migrate in winter!

Then we read a silly story called Tacky the Penguin!  The story made us laugh!  Tacky was an odd bird!  He was not like any of his penguin friends, but his odd behaviors helped to save the day!

We talked about how we are all different and that is what makes each of us special.  It is okay to be different from your friends.

Awhile ago, we painted our feet.  Today we got out our footprints and compared them to one another.  We realized that no footprint was exactly alike!

Then we used our footprints to make our own unique penguins!

We had a lot of energy today so we went into the gym and used the scooters again!  This time, we pretended to be penguins swimming in the ocean.  The penguins caught letter fish and had to tell Miss McCabe what letter fish they caught.

After a delicious snack, we played.  The penguin eggs and sensory table were popular once again.

In the afternoon, several children were excited about a Lego creation they made and did not want to pick it up.  They decided to make signs saying "do not touch."  It was interesting watching them stretch out the words and write the sounds they heard!

The counting jar came back in the afternoon so we spent some time guessing and counting the items in the jar.

We even managed to make it outside in the morning!  Several children had fun pretending to toboggan down the hills like penguins!

Enjoy the long weekend! :)
