Polar Bear Fun!

It was frightfully chilly outside today, but that didn't stop us from having fun inside!  For our arrival activity, we reviewed the oval shape and worked on our fine motor skills of coloring within the lines while coloring an oval booklet.  We also practiced reading it together!

Then we reviewed all of the neat facts that we learned about polar bears.  Wow!  We remembered a lot!  Miss McCabe read a book that taught us even more about polar bears.  It had real pictures.  We learned that it was a non-fiction book because it is not a pretend story.  See what your child can tell you about polar bears!

We did a large group project and made our own polar bears.  This was tricky because Miss McCabe did not draw any lines to cut on!  We had to use our good listening ears and try to cut out our own shapes.  It was a little tricky to get the proportions right, but all of our polar bears turned out to be so unique!

Then it was time to cut out our letter Jj jello jigglers!  They sure were jiggly (and yummy!)  We even completed our letter Jj snack with some juice to help reinforce our learning of the letter Jj!

Since it was too cold to go outside, we went in the gym to expend some of that extra energy.  Miss McCabe got out the scooters.  We pretended that we were polar bears swimming in the ocean and had to catch fish.  Then we told Miss McCabe what type (letter) of fish we caught.  Boy, did we have to use our big muscles today!  We found out that polar bears have really strong muscles because it was a lot of work!  It was so much fun that the children actually volunteered to give up their playtime to stay in the gym and catch more fish!  Unbelievable! :)

We were so exhausted that we decided not to be polar bears anymore and that we should be brown or black bears so that we could hibernate!

Then we reviewed other animals that we know also hibernate and even read a story that introduced more animals that hibernate in winter!

The counting jar came back in the morning session.  First we had to guess how many pennies were in the jar without counting.  This was a little tricky because we had to try to think about a number that made sense!  After recording everybody's guesses, we counted to see how many there actually were.  Everyone is excited to get a turn to fill the counting jar at home!

We are very excited about our field trip tomorrow!  Some time was spent reviewing rules and expectations for our field trip.  Please remember that your child does not need to bring snow pants, boots, folders, or backpacks to school tomorrow!  Your child just needs a coat, hat, and mittens.  Shoes that won't fall off would also be great to wear!
