Pockets!

Today we reviewed what a marsupial is - an animal that has a pouch (or pocket) to hold its young.  We made a pocket snack by filling a pita pocket with pizza sauce, pepperoni, and cheese!

We read a story about a kangaroo that didn't have any pockets for her joey.  She tried to carry her joey like other animals do, but that didn't work.  Finally, the wise owl sent her to the city and she found some special pockets that left her the only kangaroo in the world with several pockets!

We counted how many pockets we had.  The winner was 8 pockets!  In our journals, we wrote about what we would put in our pockets.

During centers, we made a kangaroo.  Then we had to cut out only joeys with pictures that begin with the letter k (key, king, koala, etc.) to put inside the kangaroo's pocket.

We also worked on counting and number identification while playing a beanbag toss kangaroo number hopping game.  Some of us worked on numbers 0-10 and others worked on those tricky teen numbers.

Then it was finally time to get our special snack out of the oven.  We let it cool while we washed our hands and set the tables.  Then it was time to eat!  Delicious!  Most of the children claimed that it was "the best snack ever," which was great to hear!

Then we played.  Most of our play involved pretending to be kangaroos!  Several children also chose to continue to play the beanbag kangaroo hop number game at playtime.

Another story we read today was about a cow that was tired of being on the farm.  She soon discovered a zoo and asked several animals if she could live with them.  Most of them weren't very nice to her.  Finally she meets the zookeeper and he shows her a special spot that is just right for her - the petting zoo!  We talked about how some animals, such as lions, aren't safe to put in a petting zoo.

We also enjoyed playing outside on the playground!

Have a great evening! :)
