Zookeepers!

For our arrival activity, we drew a picture of our favorite zoo animal to glue on our giant zookeepers from yesterday.

Zookeeper Bob helped us learn about all of the different roles a zookeeper has, such as feeding the animals, cleaning the cages, watching to make sure they are healthy, and even playing with or giving toys to animals so they don't get bored.

We talked about how a zookeeper needs to know a lot about animals.  On the SMART Board, we sorted animals by whether the zookeeper needs to feed them meat or plants.  Some animals, such as a bear, were tricky because they eat both plants (berries) and meat (fish).

Then we read a story about a zookeeper named Sam.  He was busy feeding all of the animals with food from his wagon.  When his wagon became empty, the elephant started to cry because he thought that Sam forgot to feed him.  Sam didn't forget - he just needed to fill the entire wagon with hay because the elephant needs so much!

We also worked on vocabulary while playing a "What's Missing? Zookeeper" game and sang a song about the different roles a zookeeper has.

During centers, we made a "Feed the Animals" booklet.  On each page, we had to find the correct foods to feed each animal, as well as count out the correct amount of each food.

We also worked with a partner to play a "Feed the Animals" beginning sounds game.  During circle time, we talked about how zookeepers have to write notes about each animal.  They need to record what the animal eats, how it interacts with other animals, and its likes or dislikes.  We pretended to be zookeepers recording which animals we fed.  With our partners, we rolled letter dice.  Then we had to figure out which animal started with that letter to stamp on our sheet.  We needed to continue until we had recorded that all of the animals on our paper were fed.  There was a lot of laughter as they played with a friend.

After a delicious snack of applesauce, we played.  Unfortunately there are no playtime pictures from today.  I was busy helping children work on their special T-shirts during this time!

We also read an alphabet zookeeper story.  The book helped us learn even more about a zookeeper's job.  It also helped us learn new vocabulary, such as holding cage, quarantine, incubator, and veterinarian.  Everyone was surprised about all of the work that a zookeeper has to do!  They were especially impressed with the fact that a zookeeper has to trim an elephant's toenails!

Then we headed outside to enjoy the nice weather!  In the morning, we hunted for bugs on the walking trail.

In the afternoon, we played with the balls.

Remember to wear your best Hawaiian outfits on Thursday for sunscreen awareness!  Please note that 4K will not be involved in tomorrow night's Author's Tea.  We are still in need of some pita pockets and shredded mozzarella cheese for a special snack next week.  Thanks to the families that already donated some of the needed ingredients!  Have a great "home day" tomorrow!
