Zoo Babies

Happy Friday!  After completing some assessments and playing, Zookeeper Bob helped us learn about baby animals.  We learned that some zoos have nurseries, which are special places for the babies.  The nurseries help the zookeepers make sure the babies are healthy and safe.  When the babies get big enough, they then join the grown-up animals in their exhibits.

We read a silly story about a mom who got lost as she was on her way to the hospital to have a baby.  She ended up at the zoo.  When she got home, she found out that the baby was really an alligator baby!  She kept having to go back to the zoo only to find out that she had the wrong baby again!  The mom ended up bringing home a baby gorilla, alligator, and seal.  Finally her daughter went to the zoo and heard the baby crying.  The gorilla mom had the baby!  It was a silly story!

Some time was spent talking about names for different baby animals, such as a baby elephant is called a calf and a baby seal is called a pup.  The story Down by the Station helped us learn some names for different types of baby animals.

During centers, we made a riddle booklet about baby zoo animals.  Miss McCabe read the clues and we had to guess each animal.  On the last page, we had to draw a baby zoo animal and then give clues.  Our friends had fun trying to guess our baby zoo animals!

We also played memory.  Everyone had fun trying to match the moms with their babies!

Do you know what a kookaburra is?  We learned that a kookaburra is a type of bird that lives in Australia.  It eats meat, such as snakes, lizards, and fish.  We listened to what it sounds like!  When Miss McCabe was in Australia, the kookaburras would wake her up every morning.  It kind of sounds like it is laughing and made us all laugh a lot! :)  You can listen to what it sounds like by clicking below.

We were excited to realize that kookaburra starts with the letter K!  We also learned a song about a kookaburra.

Then we spent some time outside playing!  We love the nicer weather!

We have also been counting down the days until we go to the zoo!  The children are excited that we get to go next week! :)

Have a great weekend!
