Busy Beavers

We sure were busy beavers today!  Our day started out with journaling about our favorite pond animals.  We are getting good at hearing those beginning sounds!

Some of us chose to make our favorite pond animal be an animal that lives near ponds to get water to drink or catch fish.

During circle time, we learned all sorts of facts about beavers.  Do you know what a baby beaver is called?  See if your child remembers!  We talked about how beavers use their teeth to chop down trees and make lodges to live in on the water.  Everyone was fascinated by how the beaver slaps its tail on the water to warn of danger.  We read a story about a beaver family.

We practiced sequencing number logs on the SMART Board.

During centers, we made our own beaver puppets.  Then we practiced sequencing number logs in order.  Some of us worked on numbers 1-10 while others worked on numbers 1-20.  This would be a good activity to also do together at home!  Ask your child to show you how he/she is able to put the number logs in order!

We also worked on counting while reading a silly pond story.

Then we pretended that we were frogs.  We hopped from lily pad to lily pad like frogs while collecting various pond animals that were scattered all over.

Next we sorted and graphed the pond animals that we collected.  We talked about the concepts of more, less, or a tie and did a lot of counting!

Then we played.

After playtime, we looked at the parts of a dragonfly from a story we had read earlier in the day.  We talked about how dragonflies have two sets of wings.  Then we made our own dragonflies and even got out the glitter paint to make sparkly eyes!

To end our day, we played outside in the snow!

Enjoy the "home day" tomorrow.  I will see you on Thursday!
